Results from January 8th

25 hardy souls teed off in temperatures around freezing, with 6 seeking shelter and warmth after 9 holes. It was actually a nice day for most of the round - bright and sunny. Just very cold!

Dave Robson came out on top with a hefty 43 points to scoop £20 and a 5-shot cut. Well done to Dave. Gus Merelie and Mike Crofts weren't too far behind on 40 points for joint second and a fiver each. Scant reward, some may say...

Front and back nines were won by Jeff Titman and Eugene Hickey in 19 and 18 points respectively, for a fiver each.

Celebrating the Life of Alan Hall

It saddens me to have to report the passing of our lovely friend Alan Hall earlier this week. Alan was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word - the epitome of "Old Harpenden". He was still playing the occasional round (sometimes wearing tropical shorts that had belonged to his father!) and was regularly to be seen in the clubhouse, ready to chat to anyone. Those of us who were at the annual dinner at the George last month had the pleasure not only of his company but of his musical talent - Alan played in a band most of his life and always gave us a tune and a song or two on his ukulele at our awards nights. There will be many more swindle stories to be told I'm sure.

Alan's funeral will be at St Nicholas' Church in Harpenden on Feb 4th, followed by a celebration of his life at the APGC clubhouse. All his golfing chums are welcome; more details to follow in due course.
